Leica M EV1 Review: A New Way to Shoot the M-System

The Leica M-System has always been defined by its rangefinder—that mechanical masterpiece of glass and prisms that has remained largely unchanged for seven decades. However, Leica recently took a bold leap into the future with the Leica M EV1.
I’ve spent years shooting with various M bodies, and until recently, the M11-P was my primary tool. But when the Leica M EV1 was announced, I found myself drawn to its promise of modern precision. I eventually purchased the Leica M EV1 to replace my Leica M11-P, and after months of shooting, I’m ready to share how this “digital-first” M handles the real world.
Introduction
Stepping away from a traditional rangefinder is no small decision for a Leica enthusiast. The Leica M11-P is a pinnacle of discreet, high-resolution photography, but I found myself increasingly relying on the external Visoflex 2 for critical focus with fast lenses like the Summilux. When I heard about the Leica M EV1, a camera that integrates that electronic experience directly into the body, I knew it was time for a change. Replacing my Leica M11-P with the Leica M EV1 wasn’t about leaving tradition behind; it was about embracing a tool that better matches how many of us shoot in the high-resolution digital age.
What is the Leica M EV1?
The Leica M EV1 is a full-frame, manual-focus digital camera that maintains the iconic Leica M-mount but removes the optical rangefinder mechanism entirely. In its place sits a high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF).
Technically, it shares the same powerhouse internal components as the M11 series, including the 60.3MP BSI CMOS sensor and the Maestro III processor. However, by removing the complex mechanical rangefinder, Leica has created a “Third Pillar” in the M-System: we now have Analog (M-A, MP), Digital Rangefinder (M11), and Digital EVF (Leica M EV1). Build, Design, and Handling
The first thing you notice about the Leica M EV1 is its “clean” face. Without the rangefinder windows, the front of the camera is a singular, uninterrupted expanse of diamond-pattern leatherette. It feels remarkably like a Leica Q3 in the hand but with the unmistakable density of an M body.- Weight: It is approximately 46g lighter than the black Leica M11-P, weighing in at just 484g with the battery. This lightness is noticeable during long days of street photography.
- Controls: The layout remains minimalist. You won’t find a forest of buttons here—just the essential shutter speed dial, a high-quality rear touchscreen, and a new custom function lever on the front that allows you to toggle focus aids without moving your eye.
- Durability: The body is crafted from magnesium and aluminum. It feels indestructible, maintaining that “milled from a solid block of metal” sensation that defines the brand.
The EVF Experience
The heart of the Leica M EV1 is its 5.76-million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. For those of us used to the “patch” of a rangefinder, switching to a 100% coverage EVF is transformative.- Accuracy: Unlike a rangefinder, which can suffer from parallax errors (where what you see isn’t exactly what the lens sees at close distances), the EVF shows you the exact frame.
- Focusing: The Leica M EV1 makes manual focusing almost effortless. With focus peaking (which highlights sharp edges in red) and instant 5x or 10x magnification, I can nail the focus on a f/1.4 Summilux lens every single time, even in low light where rangefinder patches often disappear.
- Refresh Rate: At 60fps, the motion is fluid. It doesn’t feel like you’re looking at a screen; it feels like you’re looking at the world.
Image Quality
If you loved the look of the M11, you would love the Leica M EV1. It utilizes the same Triple Resolution Technology, allowing you to choose between 60MP, 36MP, or 18MP RAW files.
- Detail: The 60.3MP sensor captures an incredible amount of information. You can crop into a photo significantly and still have enough resolution for a large fine-art print.
- Dynamic Range: With up to 15 stops of dynamic range, the Leica M EV1 handles harsh shadows and bright highlights with ease. I’ve found the “Highlight-Weighted” metering mode particularly useful for preserving detail in bright skies.
- Color: The colors are classic Leica—natural, slightly warm, and with a “pop” that makes images feel three-dimensional.
Who is the Leica M EV1 for?
The Leica M EV1 is a specialized tool. It isn’t trying to be a Sony or a Canon with blazing-fast autofocus. It is for:
- Manual Focus Lovers: Photographers who enjoy the tactile feel of M-lenses but want the modern certainty of an EVF.
- Macro and Telephoto Shooters: Traditional rangefinders struggle with lenses longer than 90mm or very close-up shots. The Leica M EV1 handles these perfectly.
- Travelers: If you want one compact, high-resolution body that is easy to focus in any lighting condition, this is it.
Final Thoughts
The Leica M EV1 is a bold step. Purists might miss the mechanical “click-clack” of the rangefinder, but in practical use, the Leica M EV1 is simply more versatile. It takes the best glass in the world—Leica M lenses—and gives them a modern home that ensures every shot is technically perfect.
While I deeply respected my Leica M11-P, the Leica M EV1 has removed the “guesswork” from my workflow. It’s a camera that gets out of your way and lets you focus on the most important part of photography: the composition and the moment.
