Monumental Cemetery of Milan

Designed by the architect Carlo Maciachini and opened in 1866, the Monumental Cemetery of Milan is considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world.

The cemetery has a wide range of contemporary and classical Italian sculptures, Greek temples, elaborate obelisks, and other original works, such as a scaled-down version of the Trajan’s Column.

The Monumental Cemetery of Milan is considered an extraordinary open-air museum that records the city’s historical events and the lives of its leading citizens.

Some of the individuals interred in the cemetery include:

  • Arturo Toscanini – Conductor
  • Edoardo Bianchi – Creator of the Modern Bicycle
  • Francesco Hayez – Painter
  • Vladimir Horowitz – Pianist
  • Alberto Ascari – Formula One Champion Driver
  • Antonio Ascari – Grand Prix Champion Driver
  • Gaspare Campari – Spirits Industry Owner
  • Alessandro Manzoni – a Poet and Novelist and considered the founder of the modern Italian language.

I want to thank my cousin Daniela who lives in Milan, Italy, for giving me a tour of the cemetery. I would not have been able to capture the images in the short timeframe without her extensive knowledge of the cemetery grounds.
